How Capital Gains Tax Works
1. Holding Period
Assets held more than 1 year qualify for long-term (preferential) rates. Shorter holdings are short-term.
2. Preferential Rates
Long-term gains are taxed at 0%, 15%, or 20% depending on your total income and filing status.
3. Ordinary Rates
Short-term gains are added to your ordinary income and taxed at your regular marginal rate.
4. NIIT
A 3.8% tax applies to net investment income if your income exceeds the filing-status threshold.
Note: This is an estimate based on 2025 IRS rules. Actual capital gains tax may differ based on your full tax situation, losses, and basis adjustments.
