How Self-Employment Tax Works
1. Net Earnings
Only 92.35% of your net profit is subject to SE tax. The remaining 7.65% represents the employer portion.
2. SE Tax Rate
SE tax is 15.3%: 12.4% Social Security (up to the wage base) plus 2.9% Medicare (no limit).
3. Additional Medicare
A 0.9% surcharge applies to combined wages and SE earnings above the filing-status threshold.
4. Deduction
You can deduct 50% of your SE tax (the employer portion) from your AGI on Form 1040.
Note: This is an estimate based on 2025 IRS rules. Actual self-employment tax may differ based on your full tax situation.
